The Southern Beltway:  I-79 to Mon-Fayette Expressway

Detailed studies for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) are ongoing for the Southern Beltway from Interstate 79 to the Mon/Fayette Expressway.  Workshops continue to be held with municipal officials, community groups and concerned citizens to receive public comments on the alternatives currently being considered for the project.

As the study team considers comments from the public, as well as detailed engineering and environmental studies, they will continue to refine the alternatives to determine how impacts to businesses and residents can be minimized or avoided while balancing the need to minimize or avoid impacts to sensitive environmental features.  It is anticipated that a series of public meetings will be held later this year to present the detailed studies for this project and obtain public comment prior to the circulation of the DEIS.

Following the public meetings, the DEIS will be prepared and should be released for public comment in 2003.  During the public comment period, a public hearing will be held for the project.  Following an evaluation of the comments received during the DEIS comment period and public hearing, a Final Environmental Impact Statement will be prepared and then released for additional public comment.  After taking the comments received on the FEIS into consideration, the Federal Highway Administration will issue a Record of Decision, which will identify the Selected Alternative for the project.
