One local group has decided to honor some of
the key figures involved in supporting the Mon/Fayette Expressway project.
FAECO (Fayette Expressway Completion Organization)
has presented plaques to state Senator Richard Kasunic, U.S. Representative
Frank Mascara, David Zazworsky, special assistant to the Pennsylvania Turnpike
Commission, and Mike Ellis, executive editor of the Herald-Standard.
"There were a series of four
awards," FAECO executive committee chairman Jim Marzullo said.
"We decided it was high time we honored
some individuals who have been instrumental in keeping the Fayette County
sections of the expressway moving forwards, and in one case, completing the
Mason-Dixon Link," Marzullo said.
"We realize there are hundreds of people
who have worked diligently on behalf of the expressway, and the FAECO executive
committee felt these four stood out among all others."
Marzullo added FAECO did not do this to
slight others, "but, unfortunately, we can't give a plaque to everyone
involved. We wish we could."
George Franks of Masontown Trophy Co.,
Marzullo added, donated the plaques that were presented.
"This recognition is truly an honor for
me because it is the first special recognition I've received since I became
involved with this transportation project some 30 years ago," Mascara said.
"The expressway, once completed, will be
the economic engine that drives this region into the future.
"The Uniontown to Brownsville segment is
an important component of the expressway for me not only because I was born and
raised in Fayette County, but because Fayette County has, until now, been
overlooked when it comes to its transportation infrastructure. I truly
believe that the outlying communities will see firsthand what a sound
transportation system can do for their economy," Mascara said.
"I accept this recognition plaque from
FAECO on behalf of our entire Mon/Fayette Expressway Management Team. The
outstanding progress that has been made to advance the Mon/Fayette projects to
construction is dire cutely related to the excellent team of people we have
assembled to work on these major projects," Zazworsky said.
The Mon/Fayette Expressway will stretch about
65 miles south from Pittsburgh through the Monongahela River Valley and western
Fayette County to Interstate 68 in West Virginia, just east of Morgantown.
It will improve access to redevelopment sites in the economically depressed Mon
River towns where the steel industry once flourished. It also will provide
faster and safer travel options for through traffic, particularly commercial
vehicles, that now use existing north-south arteries such as PA Route 51, PA
Route 88, PA Route 837, and PA Route 857.
